TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized test that measures the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. It is widely accepted by universities, colleges, and organizations around the world as evidence of English language proficiency for academic and professional purposes.

The TOEFL test assesses the four language skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. It is available in two versions: the TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) and the TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test), with the iBT being the more commonly administered version.

Why study TOEFL

The TOEFL test is available in two versions:
  • 1. TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test) TOEFL iBT is the current and most widely administered format of the test. It is conducted entirely online and assesses the four language skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. Test-takers interact with the test through a computer, and it is available at authorized test centers equipped with internet connectivity.
  • 2. TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test) TOEFL PBT, less common now, primarily assesses Reading, Listening, and Writing skills.

The TOEFL score ranges from 0 to 120 for the TOEFL iBT test. Each section is scored individually, and the scores are then combined to calculate the total score. Institutions and organizations set their own score requirements for admission or other purposes.

TOEFL scores are accepted by over 11,000 universities, colleges, and organizations in more than 150 countries. It is recognized by academic institutions as well as immigration agencies and professional organizations globally as a valid assessment of English language proficiency. Institutions and organizations use TOEFL scores for admissions, English language program placements, scholarships, and certification purposes.
